Pride Month on Netflix: the guide on what to watch

For Pride Month Netflix offers a collection of true stories starring some LGBTQ icons

Netflix has always had a special focus on the LGBTQ community, offering TV series, films and documentaries that represent it from many points of view. S.let’s cover together for this pride month 2021, what to watch, including TV series, documentaries and movies.

A secret love

It tells the almost seventy-year incredible love story of Pat Henschel and Terry Donahue, the professional baseball player who inspired the hit film Winning Girls. The film, however, did not elaborate on the true story of the two women, which remained a secret for most of their lives. This documentary follows Terry and Pat from their first meeting, chronicles their career in Chicago, coming out to their conservative families and doubts regarding marriage. Their love proves strong until the end, even in the face of difficulties due to old age and illness.

In my family

Circus of Books

For over 35 years, the gay porn shop Circus of Books has represented a space for the LGBT + community of Los Angeles to socialize and live their tastes without being judged. Unbeknownst to many customers, the shop was run by Karen and Barry Mason, a traditional heterosexual couple with three children sent to study in religious institutions and unaware of their parents’ activity. For a long time the Masons have not disclosed the nature of their business to friends and family. Hidden behind their secret, they experienced the birth of the HIV / AIDS epidemic firsthand, losing a generation of trusted addicts. However, during that time they never identified themselves as activists, but only as ordinary entrepreneurs who satisfied a market demand, which was then annihilated by the arrival of the Internet.

The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson

Victoria Cruz investigates the mysterious 1992 death of black gay rights activist and Stonewall veteran Marsha P. Johnson. The documentary includes archival interviews with Johnson and new interviews with his family, friends and other activists.

Disclosure

It offers an illuminating and unprecedented look at the portrayal of transgender characters in film and television, demonstrating how Hollywood reflects and at the same time feeds the deepest anxieties related to the theme of the genre. The brightest and most creative minds in the trans universe, including Laverne Cox, Lilly Wachowski, Yance Ford, Mj Rodriguez, Jamie Clayton and Chaz Bono, share their reactions and objections to some of Hollywood’s most beloved moments.

Elisa and Marcela

1885. Elisa and Marcela meet in the school where they work. Begun as a deep friendship, their relationship turns into a romantic one to be kept secret. Suspicious, Marcela’s parents send their daughter abroad for a couple of years. Upon his return, Marcela passionately finds Elisa and the two decide to spend their life together. Oppressed by social conventions and gossip, they decide to devise a plan. Elisa will leave the city, then will come back disguised as Mario to be able to marry Marcela. But the road will not be easy for this forbidden love.

Feminists: portraits of an era

This documentary focuses on the current cultural climate, revealing with clarity and urgency the continuing need for change.

Queer Eye
