Super Mario Kart: a hacker brings back the editor

A “buo-nint-editor” few words: a hacker has put back on track the editor originally used with Super Mario Kart on Super Nintendo

A hacker called MrL314 successfully put a back on its feet editor of slopes for Super Mario Kart, but not of any one. After all, Super Mario Maker on Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and its sequel on Switch have simply given fans the reins of tools already used in their time by Nintendo EAD (we talked about it last time with Koji Kondo). Now, however, the fan has been able to breach the game code by exploiting the ROM prototype emerged in last year’s leak, in which the way to tamper with the tracks was more or less available. There is a lot to talk about.

How the hacker found the Super Mario Kart editor

Get functionality back on track SFX-DOS of Super Mario Kart, and with it the track editor, took the hacker “several months”. According to his explanation, SFX-DOS was a operating system internal to Nintendo, created for use by developers only. In practice, by connecting the keyboard, signal output cables, printer and floppy disk reader, the Super Nintendo (or Super Famicom in Japan) was transformed into a computer. The editor allows you to place instrument panels, coins, pipes, enemies and even the points that the artificial intelligence has to reach.

However, the editor is not exempt from limits. The track cannot be altered directly, and placed objects must adhere to the track theme (for example, Bowser’s Castle Thwomp cannot be placed on the Donut Plains tracks). However, now MrL314 has fixed the code and intends to release the prototype in the future. The patch will still require some work, but once completed it will be ready to end up in the hands of all fans still waiting for a hypothetical Mario Kart Maker. Maybe, let’s assume, a second collaboration with Ubisoft to enjoy Nadeo’s help.
