The Game Awards 2021: Activision Blizzard will not be present

The Game Awards 2021 will be an opportunity to celebrate video games, and it seems that within it there will be no space for Activision Blizzard, after the events in which the company is involved

We are less than a week away from The Game Awards 2021, and the scandals that have loomed within Activision Blizzard have been the result of discussion between the organizers of the iconic awards ceremony. The company has found itself in recent days increasingly cornered not only from the report that emerged in the Washington Post, from the numerous dropouts in the staff and from the positions of the major gaming companies such as Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo, but also by the American government itself, with some states exerting strong pressure to push the company to intervene on its serious internal toxicity problem. Also in the Washington Post, the same Geoff Keighley, host of the TGA, said as he was thinking about how to act regarding Activision Blizzard’s presence at the event.

Activision Blizzard has a problematic role for The Game Awards

During an interview where he exposed things gamers might have expected from The Game Awards 2021, Keighley confirmed the absence of the most anticipated new titles of Activision Blizzard, aka Diablo IV and Overwatch 2. In addition, he says he wants to support the employees and developers who work at Activision Blizzard and who have not had any involvement in the facts, but at the same time also those who have come forward with their dramatic stories. Geoff would like to proceed with extreme caution on the actions to be taken, thus hesitating to support an official position towards the allegations reported in recent months.

One reason for this is how Activision’s president actually is at the head of the advisory committee of the event, and two of its games are nominated for this edition, with Call of Duty as Best Esports Game and Call of Duty Warzone as Best Game with Ongoing Support. Addressing Twitter users, Keighley elaborates further on Activision Blizzard’s position in these The Game Awards: the publisher will not appear on occasions other than those who see their titles as nominees in the categories of the awards.

The conductor also expresses how there is no room for abuse, harassment or predatory practices in any company or community; he understands how The Game Awards are a useful platform to accelerate and inspire change. He believes that a joint effort is needed to be able to build a better and more inclusive environment, so that everyone can feel safe in creating the best video games in the world.
