What If…? episode 6: Tony Stark is not a hero

What If…? is now in its sixth episode on Disney Plus and focused on the beloved Tony Stark. Here is our review of What If…? Episode 6

ORIGINAL TITLE: What If… ?. GENDER: Superheroes. COUNTRY: United States. DIRECTOR: AC Bradley. DURATION: 9 episodes, 34 mins approx. DISTRIBUTOR: Disney +. RELEASE: September 15, 2021.

What If…? arrived on Disney Plus in episode 6 which finally brings us to the home of Tony Stark who until now had not yet had room for himself, with his own hypothetical universe. One of the brightest and most interesting characters in the Marvel universe gets to have an episode of his own in which, however, he appears subdued along with the entire plot.

When Tony Stark doesn’t become Iron Man | What If…? episode 6

From the point of view of the script, in this episode the narrative arc is finally consistent with both the original Marvel stories and with the basic concept of the series, namely the “what if …”. In fact, here we see the hypothesis in which Tony Stark that day in the attack of the 10 rings is saved by Killmonger and therefore will not become Iron Man. Coherent script and more than correct hypothesis, in a situation in which Tony remains a multimillionaire entrepreneur, but that he trusts and approaches the wrong person, Killmorger, his savior and belonging to the Black Panther story arc.

What If ...? episode 6: Tony Stark is not a hero

All right, but the episode itself never really starts, always giving the viewer the feeling that something interesting is happening, but it doesn’t happen. The action is not lacking, of course and also in this case it is well done, pressing and with a style of images that however make the episode suitable even for an underage audience. There is also no shortage of witty jokes, irony and the resemblance of the animated characters to those in the film.

A script without an idea | What If…? episode 6

What is missing in this episode is the idea. While in the past episodes we have seen many ideas, among all the episode 4 dedicated to Dr Strange, here we see only a hypothesis that is told correctly, but without a basic idea and without a moral. Besides all, the choice of mixing two different narrative spheres, makes Tony Stark take a back seat and is also very subdued in his character. In him, there is no arrogance, there is no swagger, there is no impulsiveness. There is only one man who with a different destiny goes out becoming predictable and even less witty than usual.

We are therefore faced with the umpteenth situation in which this mini series still surprises: each episode is different from the other, both in terms of intentions, and as defects of realization. And this also appears as a further attempt to experiment with this type of narration. As if the mini series wanted to be a pilot of an entire genre and with each episode it explores all the possible storytelling possibilities to test the one that can be most effective.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it can be said that this What If…? did her homework, he did them in the correct way and respecting the Marvel fans who were able to finally see narrative coherence. But it lacks everything, pathos, plot, real entertainment and even morals. Overall, uninspiring, as some previous episodes have been able to do within a very linear plot and a very confusing script.

So let’s wait for episode 7 which will surely amaze us, given the direction the series is taking, but which we also hope will convince us.

When Tony Stark isn’t Iron Man, you get bored

Points in favor

  • Consistent script
  • Inherence with the concept of the series
