WhatsApp publishes the Etiquette of voice messages: 6 golden rules

Comfortable, at times exhausting, but certainly easy to send and listen to. Voice messages on WhatsApp have revolutionized our communication, and the 2X option saved many from nervous breakdowns. Just think that every day, on the popular messaging app, all over the world, they are sent over 7 billion voice messages.

After all, it has become almost an automatic gesture, especially when the same performance cannot be guaranteed with written messages. But do we use them correctly? To answer this question, we asked the right person: WhatsApp. The answer is a manual, consisting of six simple rules, which compose a real one Etiquette voice messages.

Six golden rules to become a “professional” of voice messages on WhatsApp

The drafting of this mini manual took place with the advice of Jo Bryant, an expert in bon ton. Here then, without further ado and turns of phrase as in certain audio messages, the six golden rules on Whatsapp.

  • Don’t record a podcast. While each of us has a different opinion on the ideal length of a voice message, try to limit it to 1 of 2 minutes. If a message is too long to write, but at the same time too short for a call, voice messages are the perfect solution. And if you get an unbearably long voice message, you can play it back at 1.5x or 2x speed to hear it faster.
  • Break it up. If you really can’t shorten the message, consider breaking it up into shorter messages and sending them separately. Your recipient can choose whether to listen to them all together or between one engagement and another.
  • Respect others. When you listen to a voice message, pay attention to your surroundings. Loud playback can be annoying for those around you, but more importantly, the message can also contain private information. Turn down the volume or use headphones in quiet, crowded places, such as train carriages.
  • Break down the questions. Pay attention to how many questions you ask in a single voice note, so the recipient doesn’t forget half of them when he tries to answer.
  • Return the favor. If you get a voice message, try to reciprocate. A two-way voice conversation is better than a one-sided rant.
  • Be timely. Remember to respond to voice messages in a timely manner. If you are short on time, you can send a hands-free voice message while you are engaged in other activities. Just hold down the microphone icon and swipe up to stop recording. When finished, touch the icon to send the message.
