Shantae: the words of the youtuber Modern Vintage Gamer on his port for Nintendo Switch

Surprisingly, the origins of the Shantae port for Nintendo Switch are much more artisanal than we thought: it’s all the work of a youtuber

While we were working on the review of the port of Shantae (the first, for Game Boy Color) on Nintendo Switch, we found that one is hiding youtuber behind this reissue. This is the programmer Modern Vintage Gamer, which is officially out of the amateur sphere with this port optimized for the hybrid console in ways we weren’t expecting. To reveal it was himself in person, with a video on his channel that we will report for the occasion. We will also include some of the background he revealed, because some of the touches we just weren’t expecting.

Shantae, a more artisanal port than ever: word of youtuber

In his latest video, the youtuber revealed that it was his previous port of Diablo to attract the attention of Limited Run Games to do the same with the first Shantae. As there is no longer Capcom to act as a publisher and the Nintendo license logo is now useless, however, it was necessary first remove any mention of them. For this reason, Modern Vintage Gamer first had to decompress those contents from the ROM, and then recompile everything after making the appropriate changes. The latter, apparently, also include the command scheme.

This allows the original game to enjoy the same inputs seen in subsequent chapters. However, this new coat of paint alone was not enough: it was necessary that theemulation was excellent, which is why Modern Vintage Gamer recreated a dedicated program from scratch. The steps have been many, but incisive: the starting point was the iconic Tetris for Game Boy, and then moving on to more elaborate games such as Super Mario Land. MVG called the thanks received from Limited Run Games and from Matt Bozon himself, creator of the original game, “surreal”.
