The Matrix Awakens si mostra in un trailer

It’s been over a year and a half since Epic Games offered a first look at Unreal Engine 5 in action. However, the public failed to see specifically what this cutting-edge technology is capable of doing. Epic released a demo that the developers could play with for a while but no UE5 games commercially available was still released.

Until now.

During The Game Awards the public got a chance to take a look at The Matrix Awakens, a Unreal Engine 5 “experience” created by Epic Games in collaboration with the director of The Matrix, Lana Wachowski. The results were impressive and show photorealistic Neo and Trinity, peppered with impressive world and effects. The most amazing thing is that now you can play it too. But first check out the trailer above.

For those who can’t play or watch at the moment, The Matrix Awakens opens up with several scenes from the original Matrix, now convincingly recreated with photorealistic details in Unreal Engine 5. There is still some uncanny valley effect but only because the original film is so well known.

The demo then moves on to a series of interactive driving and shooting scenes. While the level of interactivity isn’t terribly high, Epic argues that the city Neo and Trinity run in it’s not just a background – is actually fully interactive.

According to a VentureBeat article, it features a staggering “seven thousand buildings made of thousands of modular parts, 45,073 parked cars (of which 38,146 are drivable), over 260 km of roads, 512 km of sidewalks, 1,248 intersections, 27,848 street lamps and 12,422 manholes” . All of this is built using i new Nanite systems e Lumen dell’Unreal Engine 5, as well as the real-time ray tracing (something not seen in previous UE5 demos).

The Matrix Awakens can be downloaded now on Xbox Series X / S and PlayStation 5.
