Google recently announced the arrival of new features in favor of sustainability. Starting today, the i function is available in the United States ecological paths, a feature he first talked about in early 2021. The feature is available for iOS e Android and, as revealed, it will arrive in Europe in 2022. Let’s find out all the details.
Google in favor of sustainability: eco-friendly roads
This new one routing option gives drivers, by default, the route that the less carbon emissions, when the estimated time of arrival is similar to that of the fastest route. In this way the drivers will travel strade eco-friendly, they will respect the environment and they will consume less.
Among other new features coming, Google Maps will get two new functions: a new mode of “Light navigation” for cyclists who want routing but don’t want turn-by-turn directions. Furthermore, users will be able to find information on sharing vehicles such as bicycles and electric scooters.
Google Maps will now show users where to find sharing stations in 300 cities around the world on Android and iOS. This is possible thanks to partnerships with Donkey Republic e Tier in Europe e Bird e Spin in the United States.
“With the eco-friendly routing feature, Google will always show you the fastest route – and now also the one that is most fuel efficient,” he says. Russell Dicker, the Senior Director of Transportation of Google Maps. “So with just a few taps, you can see the relative fuel economy between the different options and the difference in estimated time of arrival.”
Google believes this new routing option “has the potential” to allow Maps users to avoid further 1 million tons of carbon emissions per year.
Google also plans to take advantage of theartificial intelligence to optimize the efficiency of traffic lights. The CEO of Google and Alphabet, Sundar Pichai, revealed:
“We are looking for new ways to make road routes in urban centers more efficient. One of them is preventative research with the use of artificial intelligence to optimize the efficiency of traffic lights. We experimented with AI in Israel to predict traffic conditions and make sure that traffic lights alternate at the best time. As a result we have achieved a 10-20% reduction in fuel consumption and delays at intersections. “
Google’s purpose is to improve this feature and make it available in other cities around the world.
