Facebook is finally adopting 2-factor authentication (2FA) as a rule for some of your most risky accounts. A somewhat strategic move, which will support the platform in guaranteeing the security of the most “vulnerable” users such as journalists, politicians, celebrities and the like. This is in addition to the system called “Facebook Protect”, which instead ensures the safety of political figures on the platform
Facebook Protect and 2FA mandatory for the security of vulnerable users
The 2-factor authentication system is as simple as it is effective. To log into a system, a user needs to prove that it is really him by using a device or secondary system to which a code is sent. Generally speaking, people use their smartphones to carry out this practice. After all, it is quite clear that this is a device that can only be in the hands of the owner of the account in question. It is therefore no wonder that Facebook has decided to make 2FA mandatory for some users.
Added to this is the Facebook Protect system, which ensures that no one posts offensive material on the pages of a political candidate. Although it has been around for a while, the platform has now chosen to increase its effectiveness. Now, in fact, the system proactively identifies users or user groups at risk, and directs them to sign up for Facebook Protect. It remains to be seen at this point whether people will really want to exploit the system or not. Nathaniel like, Head of Security Policy at Facebook, said: “The number of alerts will vary by country / context – we are adjusting to make sure people have the time they need. So far, we’ve seen the overwhelming majority (90% +) sign up on time with no problems! ”.
