The research team of Bitdefender Antispam Lab detected a phishing campaign which takes advantage of the new variant Omicron of COVID-19 to infect victims’ devices with FormBook malware. The new phishing campaign carried out by unknown cybercriminals takes advantage of the Omicron variant, one of the most talked about topics in the news. The goal of the campaign is to have unsuspecting users download an attachment sent by e-mail. This attachment includes GuLoader, a remote access Trojan known for its anti virtual machine capabilities that allow it to evade detection. This is a well-known and very dangerous type of attack for users.

By exploiting this Trojan, criminals are able to transform the phishing campaign starring the Omicron variant into a way to spread the FormBook malware.
