Android TV 12 is one of the updates most significant in recent years and it seems very close to the release of the final version. In a new post, Google has confirmed that Android TV 12 will soon be available to the public and has expanded the preview dedicated to developers.
Android TV 12 is around the corner
Paul Lammertsma of Google has published a post on Medium where it summarizes the news of Android TV 12, which we have already known for a few months thanks to previous developer previews. In fact, among the novelties we find the 4K rendering of the user interface; the text resizing via the user menu, choosing between a small, predefined or large size; and the changing the refresh rate, which will allow for more flexibility when watching different types of content. But two important unpublished pieces of information are also revealed at the end of the post.

The first is that now, in the device ADT-3 of Google dedicated to developers, you can download the developer preview of Android 12 via OTA update instead of having to manually flash the update. This is the first time that Google has made a developer preview available via OTA on Android TV, so that’s big news.
The second novelty, much more interesting for non-developer users, is that Android TV 12 really seems around the corner. Google has not specified the official release date, but the company says the new operating system “will arrive on televisions shortly this year”. The new operating system is expected to make its appearance on some new TV models that will be released in the short term, such as the Sony Bravia which are usually announced towards the end of March. Obviously Android 12 will also be available via update in televisions already on the market, but we have to wait a little longer to find out the official date.
Android TV and Google TV have over 110 million active devices per month
A few weeks ago Google reached an important milestone: it announced that Android TV and Google TV have over 110 million of active devices per month. According to the company’s statements, about 30 million devices would have been added from May 2021 to January 2022. Much of that growth probably comes from Chromecast with Google TV, as well as templates Android TV OS Of TCL. The company has in fact revealed that it sells at least 10 million units per year.
Google, for its part, is fortunate to work with seven of the top ten smart TV OEMs worldwide, including Sony, HiSense e TCL. In addition, the growth is also linked to its partners, more than 250 globally, including over 170 Pay TV operators.
