Sony may be currently working on bringing the games PlayStation 3 your PlayStation 5 without the need to stream them over the internet. The tip comes directly from Venturebeat reporter Jeff Grubb, whose sources have indicated that behind the scenes Sony could work on a solution to emulate PS3 games on PS5.
Will PlayStation 5 become backwards compatible with PlayStation 3?
Earlier this week Sony announced that it would bring classic games to its latest console via its new PS Plus Premium subscription. When it launches in June, subscribers will get several benefits, including access to a library of 340 games of the PlayStation, PS2, PS3 and PSP generations.
However, while most of these games will be available for download and play on PS5 via emulation, Sony confirmed that PS3 titles will only be playable via cloud streaming. According to Grubb, however, the service could eventually receive PS3 emulation similar to the other systems.
“Since I’ve been talking about it all week, I’ve been searching, I’ve been asking… it looks like Sony is working on emulation for PS3 on PS5,” explained Grubb, who soon after specified that: “It may take some time.”
Although this has not been publicly stated, the problem most likely stems from the unique architecture of the PS3 and its infamous Cell processor. Emulating this system within the PS5 would be incredibly difficult, which is why Sony has currently opted for the cloud solution.
