Triennale Game Collection Volume 2: gaming meets art

Triennale Game Collection Volume 2.
The name almost speaks for itself.
In short, already in this way you could deduce that it is a collection of games, which is in some way linked to the Milan Triennale and that we are already at the second edition. And they are all correct insights. We are in fact facing the second volume of the Triennale Game Collection, a collection of experimental games created by five independent game designers and linked to the theme of the 23rd International Exhibition: Unknown Unknowns. An Introduction to Mysteries.

Designers, games and release dates

The first Triennale Game Collection dates back to 2016.
The success it achieved was incredible: over 180,000 downloads for an application that contained games that were as unusual as they were inspired.
For 2022 Triennale has decided to try again. And he did it by entrusting the lead of the project to Pietro Righi Rivafounder of the game production studio Santa Ragione.

Triennale Game Collection games and designersWADE

But this is the theory. In practice, how does this game collection work?
Well, first of all we start with the selection of designers: Yijia Chen & Dong Zhou of Optillusion (China/USA), Fern Goldfarb-Ramallo (Argentina), Nina Freeman of Star Maid Games (USA), Akwasi Afrane Bediako (Ghana) and Llaura McGee (Ireland) of Dreamfeel.
They were asked to interpret a theme, what characterizes the 23rd International Exposition, giving bottom to all their creativity and their desire to experiment, without forgetting some technical constraints. Few but necessary since all games must be based on Unity and run within the same applicationthat of the Triennale Game Collection, available for smartphones, tablets and Steam.

However, the technical limits have not prevented the designers from giving life to five small pearls, whose common thread is reflection on the mysteries of outer space as a key to reading one’s inner space. And so the new Triennale Game Collection offers a glimpse into the future, through intangible works of art, accessible from anywhere and within everyone’s reach.

But what are these games?

Face to face with the Triennale Game Collection Volume 2

So far we have told you what the Triennale Game Collection is, what Volume 2 provides and which designers are involved.
However, the question that gamers will face is another: what are these games like? What are they talking about?

WadeWADE

WADE it was the first game we were able to preview. And, we confess, it was a little shock at first. Accustomed to games full of action and often not very mind-boggling, the abyss created by Optillusion it has left us almost disoriented. Yet, once immersed in this little masterpiece, we began to appreciate every aspect, starting with the meaning: WADE wants to symbolize the stages of mourning and the feelings of uneasiness that we human beings experience when we face the unknown. And it does so by literally throwing you into the water, allowing you to take on the role of a headless man walking slowly on the bottom of the sea and giving you some small obstacles to overcome. All this while you are lulled by the songs that come from the abyss.

We Are PoemsWe Are Poems

After WADE we threw ourselves in We Are Poems that yes, it has destabilized us again. In fact, our mind tends to look for patterns and, in the case of video games, to understand how to use these patterns to be able to get to the coveted final. Here the ending is not there.
Fern Goldfarb-Ramallo’s game transports you in the queer regions of deep space, regions that resemble the surface of a bubble and are characterized by elements that move and change in a completely unexpected way. There is no pattern, there is no logic, there is no universal rule. Only elements committed to blossoming in the highest version of themselves, immersed in a riot of lights and colors.

Nonnos legendsGrandpa’s Legend

Let’s get down to earth with Grandpa’s Legend, the game of the Italian-American Nina Freeman which is inspired by her childhood. As a child, in fact, Nina always played with her grandfather’s globe and now we can relive that same experience, thanks to a magical globe that allows us to create new worlds by changing the conformation of oceans and continents.
Also in this case the classic ending is missing. You just have to enjoy the experience.

MINEMINE

MINE it is still in development but we were able to take advantage of the demo to understand its mechanics and objective. Akwasi Bediako Afrane Free Mp3 Download he chose to take us in the mine to explain the correlation between raw materials and virtual spaces. That’s why next to torches, trolleys and metal strands, we find chips, transistors and motherboards that remind us that what we have, what we do every day, depend primarily on the materials that are extracted with difficulty from the mines.

ContactContact

The last game is Contact. Also in this case we found ourselves in front of a really unusual demo, focused on the search for extraterrestrials and characterized by a complex interface that challenges us to decode and understand the visual signals on the screen. Don’t be fooled though. Behind these sci-fi ambitions are born the real memories of Llaura McGee e the path of self-recognition of a young queer woman.

Waiting for the new games …

As anticipated, the first game of the Triennale Game Collection Volume 2 will be released on July 12th. In the meantime, however, you can already download the app – Triennale Game Collection -, available for free on Steam, Google Play Store, and Apple App Store.
