799,99€. It is the list price of Oppo Reno 8 Pro. And no, it hasn’t changed from what we saw last year, with the Reno 6 Pro once again confirming the validity of this acclaimed product series.
There are mainly two elements that differentiate the Reno 8 Pro from its predecessor: design and camera. On the one hand, in fact, we have an extreme aesthetic care, the same that Oppo has reserved for its Find X for years; on the other hand we find the NPU MariSilicon X which allowed us to take home excellent shots even at night.
As always, however, we do not want to anticipate you too much so let’s take a step back and dive into Oppo Reno 8 Pro review.
Very elegant but watch out for fingerprints
The design of the Oppo Reno 8 Pro is undoubtedly unusual. In fact, the Chinese company has opted for a decidedly bulky camera module. A choice that did not thrill us at the beginning. However, a few hours were enough to appreciate the aesthetics of the newcomer who, on the one hand, it clearly stands out from the competition and, on the other hand, with its peculiar curvature it favors grip.
On the other hand, the glossy finish of the Oppo Reno 8 Pro didn’t win us over. It is in glass, very elegant and designed to withstand the small daily bumps but it really holds any footprints. A defect on which we can, however, postpone considering that most users prefer to use a cover to keep their smartphone even safer. But be careful because in this case the case is not included in the package, so you will need to buy one separately.
Reno 8 Pro then boasts a weight of 183 grams, really well distributedthe power button with a small green line in the center, the volume rocker consisting of two separate and easily accessible buttons and, finally, a lower frame that includes the slot for the two SIMs, the USB-C port and the main speaker .
Finally, we report resistance to splashes and dust with IP54 certification.
The 120 Hz display
The dimensions are quite generous, accomplice the 6.7-inch 10-bit AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2412 pixels, support forHDR10+ and a refresh rate a 120 Hz. Know that the refresh rate is adaptive so it can go down autonomously to 90 Hz or 60 Hz; alternatively you can block it at 60 Hz saving a little bit on the battery.
The settings also allow you to choose the temperature and color mode; the latter option allows you to switch from Vivid to Natural in seconds, with the former offering brighter colors and the latter offering more accuracy than the sRGB color space.
Ok, but how do you see?
Legitimate question. Let’s put aside numbers and specifications.
We absolutely loved the Oppo Reno 8 Pro’s screen for the excellent color range, the good yield of blacks and a brightness that reaches 950 nits and that allows you to use it comfortably even under the sun.
You then have the possibility to use the functionalities related to Engine 01 Ultra Vision to improve picture sharpness, colors and automatically use HDR when playing videos.
The Oppo Reno 8 Pro review: top-of-the-range performance
Oppo Reno 8 Pro mounts the Dimensity 8100-Max processor, a customized version of the SoC made by MediaTek. To accompany him 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal memory, not expandable.
We used it to do a little bit of everything and has never shown signs of abatingnot even in the face of the always demanding Asphalt 9, Call of Duty Mobile and Genshin Impact.
Also promoted the audio, with the double speaker that returns a good volume and balanced sound, and connectivity, with 5G, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, GPS, Beidou, Glonass, Galileo and QZSS.
The software is the ColorOS 12.1 based on your Android 12. By now we have learned to know and appreciate it, especially thanks to additional features such as air gestures, the sidebar, customization options and flexible windows. In short, Oppo has thought of everything, without however losing sight of the fluidity and intuitiveness of the system.
Autonomy
We have on board a 4,500 mAh battery which performs pretty well. With heavy use get to the end of the day without difficulty; with normal use you can buy up to 36 hours.
The presence of the 80W SuperVooc fast charge which takes you from 0 to 100% in about 30 minutes.
The camera with MariSilicon X
The latest top of the range from Oppo, the Find X5 Pro, can count on MariSilicon X, an element that deals solely with the processing and optimization of the photographic sector. We also find this same technology on Reno 8 Pro and the advantages are evident from the first shots.
To benefit the most is the main sensor, a 50 megapixel Sony IMX766 with aperture F / 1.8. The images you take home are rich in details, with bright but never artificial colors and no chromatic aberration. And this not only during the day. The night mode, which is activated automatically, manages to treat you high quality photos, without noise and without changing the actual colors of the sky.
We lose something with the other two sensors, the 8 megapixel ultra-wide angle one and the 2 megapixel macro, but overall the results in good light conditions are satisfactory.
It also performs well there 32-megapixel front camerawith good focus, sharp images and natural colors.
It is not a cameraphone, mind you. If you are looking for a super photographic smartphone you will undoubtedly have to turn to Find X5 Pro but the Oppo Reno 8 Pro is still remarkable.
Videos arrive at 4K e 30 fps; unfortunately you will have to opt for Full HD to get 60 fps. The movies you take home boast a good color range, lots of details and excellent fluidity in the case of 60 fps. Instead, we expected something more on the stabilization front and in the dark, where the difference with the Find X series becomes a little more evident.
The Oppo Reno 8 Pro review: conclusions
The Reno series is evolving. And this is evident.
Oppo is trying to give it even more personality with an original design as much as that of the Find X series and in addition we have top-of-the-range features, such as MariSilicon X and the presence of fast charging at 80W.
The price is demanding but justified from the completeness of the smartphone.
