A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Waterloo in Canada reveals that the devices Apple Watches are able to accurately predict users’ stress levels.
Using the Apple Watch Series 6’s ECG sensor, the researchers discovered a close correlation between data collected by the sensor (including the rate of acceleration and deceleration of heartbeats) and stress levels reported by test participants. Machine learning algorithms are then able to process this information to create a model for predicting stress levels.
Apple Watch predicts stress: studying
The study concludes that Apple Watch has “promising potential.” The researchers also suggest that because the device collects other important information such as sleep and exercise habits, the accuracy of predictions may be even greater.
At the conclusion of the report drawn up by the researchers, the experts hypothesize that the advanced features of the Apple Watch could be used to improve the mental well-being of the users. The device, the scholars suggest, could offer breathing exercises to users experiencing increasing levels of stress.
We recall that several of Apple’s competitors in the wearable field (such as Samsung, Fitbit and Garmin) provide features capable of detecting users’ stress levels. However Apple has not yet implemented a dedicated function in this sense.
