The president of Microsoft, Brad Smith, said Russia-linked intelligence groups are trying to “penetrate” gaming communities to disseminate information. The statement comes after reports that several classified Pentagon documents were leaked on a Minecraft Discord channel.
The leak was described as a “massive intelligence breach” and included documents proving US involvement in the war in Ukraine.
Microsoft president: “Russia is trying to enter the communities”
Brad Smith gave his opinion at Semafor’s World Economy Summit. The president of Microsoft said that the Kremlin would use gamer communities to spread propaganda news to discredit the US position in the current geopolitical scenario.
Smith also explained that in recent months the Minecraft security team has encountered access attempts by several Russian agents. “We have warned individual governments,” added Smith, who indicated the militants of the Wagner Group among the architects of these maneuvers.

It would therefore seem that Russia, unable to leak their news through Western media, has decided to spread them in the groups of gamers. At that point the Western media, finding them, report them. A decidedly sneaky but functional way of carrying on the pro-Russian narrative also in the West.
When the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, Smith stopped the sale of Microsoft products in Russia and accused the country of violating the Geneva Convention by using cyber attacks to target civilian sites.
