Google strengthened the security of its Play Store in 2022, deleting millions of infected apps and blocking illegal transactions. This was announced by the giant itself in a report that illustrates its initiatives to protect users and developers from possible threats.
According to the report (via Ansa), Google has closed the accounts of 173,000 developersi who distributed fraudulent applications through the Play Store, its app store for Android devices. Also, he removed 1.43 million apps that contained viruses, mainly malware capable of spying on activities on infected devices. These actions allowed Google to prevent more than $2 billion in illicit transactions.

Google has also improved its self-checking systems to detect and prevent apps asking for sensitive permissions for no reason. This mechanism, in the last three years, has led to the blocking of about 500,000 apps.
To help developers build safe apps, the company has launched new features and resources, including a dedicated community and Play Store policy guide. It also introduced a label for apps that pass an independent security review, via the Mobile App Security Assessment of App Defense Alliance, which collects some specific requirements for mobile applications.
