According to reports from The Verge, Discord is making “big changes” on its platform, also and above all on identities, a move that will force you to change your username. Don’t worry though, not everyone will have to give up their tag.
Discord’s maneuver aims to eliminate homonyms. Typically the platform adds the classics 4 digits in case of a username already used by another user (e.g. @TechPrincess0001 in case the @techgameworld.com tag has already been used). A simple solution, used for years on the web, but which involves several problems (and not only in terms of reading elegance).
Who will need to change their Discord username?
Only those who have a tag with the final 4 digits will have to change their username. Here’s how the co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy announced the change in a Discord blog post:
“We want to make it much easier for you, and for any new users coming to Discord, to connect with friends. We know that your username and identity are important, and we understand that some of you may not like this change and disagree.”
The Discord co-founder also explained that usernames are “too complicated” for people to remember.

When will we be forced to change tags? What will happen to the old ones?
The new system will be implemented “in the next weeks” and affected users will be notified with a message asking them to update their tag.
The old username will continue to work as hidden alias: it will not be visible but whoever looks for you with the old tag will be able to find you.
