Project Q is the temporary name of the Sony’s new portable devicea console with an 8-inch display that allows you to stream PlayStation 5 titles. Sony unveiled the project at PlayStation Showcase on Wednesday, explaining that it is a accessory for the PS5 and not a standalone console. The Japanese company has not yet communicated the release date and the price of the portable device.

Jim Ryan at the PlayStation Showcase says it clearly: “We will launch a dedicated device that will allow you to Stream any game from your PS5 console using Remote Play over Wi-Fi. Known internally as ‘Project Q’, it has an 8-inch HD screen and all the buttons and functionality of the DualSense wireless controller.” But it is not a portable console.
Your device will have one 8-inch HD screen with a resolution of 1080p and a frequency of 60 fpsand will support DualSense controller features such as i adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. In the global press release, Sony explains that to use Project Q, you will have to have a PS5 with games installed and a stable Wi-Fi connection.
Portable, yet remote WiFi
According to media reports at the end of the Sony event, the games that on Project Q must be installed on a single PlayStation 5 console: It appears to be meant as an accessory for the PS5, not a standalone device like the Steam Deck or the phone. And at the moment, streaming gaming from the cloud does not seem to have been thought of.
However, Sony has a cloud gaming service and Project Q may add cloud gaming in the future. It would be strange to exclude the services that bring more profit to Sony.
Sony’s brief preview did not clarify whether we will be able to use the Q to stream games outside your home. Sony’s Remote Play currently supports cellular connections, but it doesn’t look like Project Q will support it. Perhaps it will be possible to use the smartphone as a Wi-Fi hotspot to play on the go – but at the moment the details on this are few.
Gaming on the go
We’ve known for a few weeks of Sony’s intention to launch a portable console, thanks to an Insider Gaming report (which we reported here). The report had “guessed” many features of the device, such as whether it worked with Remote Play e non con il cloud gamingthe screen 8 inch LCD, il design simile a DualSense. The name was Q Lite: Project Q appears to be a very close variant.
But experts have been expecting a handheld console (or accessory) from Sony for some time, in response to the growing demand for this type of device. The Nintendo Switch was a sales phenomenonbut now there are also other options like Steam Deck of Valve and ROG Ally of Asus, which offer the ability to play newer titles on more powerful hardware than the Switch.
However, Sony has one peculiarity: Project Q seems to be able to do Game streaming over Wi-Fi only. But also the great advantage of supporting PlayStation games, a point of reference in the gaming world. Although you can already play via Remote Play on almost any iPhone, Android phone, Windows or Mac, and even Linux.
