During a company meeting, reported by The Verge, one of Meta’s top management presented the design of the company to employees new Instagram app that the company is developing to compete with Twitter. And it seems that Meta is talking to personalities like Oprah and the Dalai Lama to be among the first adopters.
Instagram’s Twitter alternative, Threads design unveiled
The new app will be iindependent of Instagram and will be based on ActivityPub, the decentralized protocol for social media. This will allow users to take your accounts and followers to other apps that support ActivityPub, come Mastodon.
The app, which Meta’s chief product officer Chris Cox called “our answer to Twitter” in the meeting, will use the Instagram account system to autofill a user’s information. The internal codename of the project is “Project 92” and the public name could be Threadsaccording to internal documents also seen by The Verge.
“We’ve received feedback from creators and public figures who want a sanely managed platformwho they feel they can trust and rely on for distribution,” Cox said, launching a direct dig at Elon Musk’s management of Twitterto the applause of the audience.
He added that the company’s goal for the app was “safety, ease of use, reliabilityand ensure that creators have a “stable place to build and grow their audience.” Cox revealed that the company already has celebrities involved in using the app, including DJ Slime, and was dealing with other big names, such as Oprah and the Dalai Lama. He stated that “coding started” for the app in January and that Meta will make the app available “as soon as possible”.
