Over the past weekend, a glitch on X (better known as Twitter) caused links and images to disappear from old tweets. Some, like Ellen DeGeneres’ historic selfie at the 2014 Oscars or the photo of Mr and Mrs Obama after their 2012 re-election, immediately returned online. But now, X says he fixed the problem permanently.
X says it fixed the glitch that deleted pre-2014 links and images
Yesterday we told you about how a glitch has deleted all links and images posted before December 2014. Among these, even very famous images such as those of Obama and Ellen Degeneres at the Oscars, one of the most retweeted posts ever on the platform. X had made these more well-known posts available within hours of the issue. But others have so far remained inaccessible.
The support Twitter account, now renamed @Support by Xha explained: “Over the weekend we had a bug that prevented us from displaying images prior to 2014. You have not lost any images or data. We have fixed the bug, and the problem will be completely resolved in the next few days”.
However, the statement doesn’t offer much detail on the bug itself. External experts have suggested that the issue could be due to changes Twitter made in 2016. These changes used metadata present in tweets published from December 2014 onwards, allowing additional data to be entered from linked web pages without affecting the character count. However, X neither confirmed nor denied this possible cause.
Others have suggested that it could be a attempt to change some posts from twitter.com domain to x.com, but there is no evidence to support this theory. On the other hand, those who claimed it could be a measure to save space on the servers were denied, if the posts actually come back online in the next few days.
If some of your old posts with images and links have disappeared, we advise you to wait for the next few days and possibly contact X support if the situation does not change.
