WhatsApp has announced the introduction of high definition (HD) photo and video sharing. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, announced in a broadcast on Facebook that the possibility of sending high-quality images is coming. And that soon the same will happen to videos.
WhatsApp announces the sharing of photos and videos in high definition
“Both HD photos and HD videos have been leaked globally,” WhatsApp spokeswoman Ellie Heatrick said in an emailed statement to The Verge. The official announcement of the implementation of HD photo and video sharing was followed by a promotional video on Threads, the Twitter alternative of Instagra.
Operation seems simple. After selecting a photo or video from their camera roll, users should notice an “HD” button at the top of the screen, to the left of the crop tool. Once this button is clicked, a menu will appear offering the choice between “Standard Quality” and “HD Quality”. This allows users to decide whether they want to share their content in high definition or standard quality.
If you still don’t see the option, you might want to check the App Store for updates. But we may need to wait a little longer, the rollout has just begun.
This news represents a significant step for WhatsApp, which until now allowed users to send only images in a greatly compressed quality. This put the app at a disadvantage compared to competing services like iMessage or Telegram.
The sharing of photos and videos in high definition aims to improve the user experience on the messaging app, which has more and more rivals.
