According to a recent report from The Information (via MacRumors), Apple is investing significantly in technologies related to artificial intelligence and machine learning. Despite Apple’s head of artificial intelligence, John Giannandrea, is skeptical of AI-powered chatbots, the company appears to be devoting considerable resources to research and development of conversational AI systems.
It seems, in fact, that Giannandrea had created a team dedicated to this area four years ago. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, they were working on an “Apple GPT” “which would appear to be focused on creating advanced language models.” Last July, Gurman said Apple engineers were testing a chatbot internally called “Ajax.”
With the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in 2022, chatbots have gained significant prominence in the technology landscape. Microsoft and Google have already presented their chatbots, but there are currently no definitive signs that Apple has plans to launch a similar product.
Apple’s “Foundational Models” team, responsible for conversational AI research, is composed of only 16 members. However, Apple would be investing millions of dollars a day to train its language models.
The report mentions un internal chatbot named “Ajax,” supposedly more powerful than the original ChatGPT 3.5. This chatbot would have been trained on a massive dataset of 200 billion parameters.
According to the report by The Information, Apple aims to develop a feature that allows a Siri, your voice assistant, to automate complex multi-step tasks. This novelty could arrive in iOS 18. In addition to the efforts in the field of voice conversations, it seems that Apple is also developing software for the generation of multimedia content, including videos and images.
