The hour-long film was shown for the first time at Tribeca Film Festival last June. The film offers a rare opportunity to enter the creative mind of Kojima, who founded his own independent studio Kojima Productions in 2015, after working for Konami from 1986 to 2015, making titles such as Metal Gear Solid.
In particular, the documentary follows Kojima in the creation of Death Stranding, his first project signed Kojima Productions. The film shows how Kojima wanted to explore the power and potential of video games as an art form, creating an original and innovative work, which addresses themes such as connection, isolation and death.
Many of Kojima’s collaborators and fans also appear in the documentary, including directors such as Guillermo del Toro (which also appears in the video game)Nicholas Winding Refn e George Miller. Also present were musical artists such as Grimes, Woodkid e CHVRCHESand actors like Norman Reeduswho plays the protagonist of Death Stranding.
Hideo Kojima’s next projects
In addition to Death Stranding, Kojima is working on other projects, including a sequel to the video game, titled Death Stranding 2: On The Beachwhich is expected to be released in 2025, a live-action film based on the video game and a new horror game in collaboration with the director Jordan Peele, called OD. Furthermore, he confirmed that he is working on a new stealth title, codenamed Physintwhich will begin production after the completion of Death Stranding 2.
The documentary Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds will arrive on Disney+ on February 23.
