According to an Apple-funded study by Analysis Group, the‘App Store generated approximately $1.1 trillion in revenue and sales for developers in 2022. The vast majority of revenue would come from the sale of apps and services.
The App Store drives $1.1 trillion in sales in 2022
Most of the $1.1 trillion figure, that is 910 billion dollars, comes from the sales of physical products and services outside the App Store, while $109 billion comes from in-app advertising e $104 billion from digital products and services. The figure includes sales from companies of all sizes, large and small, and for physical products and services, Apple did not charge fees.
Apple applies a commission between 15 and 30% for apps, in-app purchases and in-app subscriptions through the App Store. But it doesn’t charge a fee when customers do things like buy food online or pay for an Uber ride using an Apple device. In the study, “revenue” refers to apps, in-app purchases and subscriptions, while “sales” refers to products and services.
According to the Analysis Group study, developers reported revenue and sales up 29% compared to the previous year, with the travel and transport sector showing the greatest increase. The App Store grows from $643 billion in 2020 to $868 billion in 2021, before reaching $1 trillion in 2022.
Ever since the App Store launched 15 years ago, developers have gained a total of $320 billion direct from the App Store. There are 123 times more apps available now than at the end of 2008, with over 370 billion app downloads since launch.
