A federal court judge in San Jose, California will have to approve the preliminary plea deal. But it seems that the users who had bought MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with the butterfly keyboard will receive compensation.
The class action argued that the older keyboard model of Apple laptops was prone to breakdowns such as unresponsive and stuck keys, with dust and crumbs that could compromise typing too easily. They also argued that Apple often replaced keyboards with other keyboards that had the same problem.
Customers who bought one of the laptops between 2015 and 2019 in California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York and Washington will be able to receive a refund. That could go as far as 395 dollars for those who have changed the keyboard several times, 125 dollars for those who have done it only once e 50 dollars for those who have replaced single keys. Additionally, customers will have free keyboard replacement for the next four years.
The two law firms that obtained the plea deal, Girard Sharp LLP e Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith LLP, will be able to receive fees up to $ 15 milliondeducted from the 50 of the plea agreement.
Apple has changed the keyboard in all of its new laptop lines, greatly improving the typing experience. There “butterfly” keyboard did not convince customers and now it costs too 50 million dollars extras in plea bargain: a forgettable page in the history of MacBooks.
