Also Apple could introduce a technology dedicated to fingerprint scan with a sensor positioned below the display. For the moment, Apple’s Touch ID, when available, is always proposed through a physical sensor positioned on the body of the device as is the case with the very recent iPhone SE 2022 which continues to offer the sensor integrated in the front Home button. For the future, however, a new patent anticipates a possible alternative solution.
Apple has made a new patent that anticipates an under-display fingerprint sensor
The Apple’s new patent appeared online in these hours shows us one new possible solution for Touch ID. The sensor positioned below the display is capable of scan the fingerprint thanks to a beam of light projected obliquely. This solution, different from those normally adopted with the fingerprint sensors under the display, should provide greater flexibility in the use of the sensor, allowing scanning on a larger surface.
There are currently no plans to use such a sensor
At the moment, there are no confirmations regarding a possible introduction of a sensor of this type for scanning fingerprints in one of the next Apple devices. The Cupertino company has no intention of abandoning Face ID, recently updated to be used also with the mask. Furthermore, with the design change coming with the next iPhones, the Face ID sensors will take up less space, allowing the company to create new hardware solutions.
