Another major announcement from Ming-Chi Kuo. Just today, in fact, the analyst said that it is unlikely that Apple will release models of iPhone with Touch ID under the display within the next two years. A very different prediction from the one made in September 2021, when he announced that the fingerprint scanner under the screen would appear at least in the second half of 2023. Today, months later, it totally changes vision regarding Apple’s news.
Touch ID under the display: Apple won’t introduce it for a few years
“I previously predicted that iPhones would support under-display fingerprinting no earlier than 2023. But the latest survey indicates that new iPhones in 2023 and 2024 may not adopt under-display Touch ID. Face ID with a face mask on the iPhone is already an excellent biometric solution “. So stated in the tweet shared today Ming-Chi Kuo. On the other hand, according to what was reported by Joanna Stern of the Wall Street Journal and Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple tested an under-screen fingerprint scanner for some iPhone 13 models, but then decided not to carry on the project.
I previously predicted iPhones would support under-display fingerprint sensing/Touch ID in 2023 at the earliest. But the latest survey indicates new iPhones in 2023 & 2024 may not adopt under-display Touch ID. Face ID with a mask on iPhone is already a great biometrics solution.

A great misfortune, let’s face it. The Touch ID under the display it would have been very useful in case the Face ID did not work properly due to the mask. To solve the problem, however, Apple preferred to use the iOS 15.4 update, rather than change the design of the smartphone. Of course, the optimal solution would be to have both sensors hidden under the screen, but there will still be a long time to wait. At least according to what Kuo reports. In any case, the possibility that Apple introduces an iPhone with Touch ID integrated into the power button. A distant hypothesis, which, however, we do not want not to consider completely.
