AVM FRITZ! Box 4060 review: design and installation
Let’s start with the aspect that most impressed us after taking this modem out of the box. As we all know, despite being excellent products of excellent quality, FRITZ! Boxes have always had a rather particular design, perhaps anachronistic? But with this new AVM FRITZ! Box 4060 history may begin to change. The fact that it develops vertically is already a great element of innovation reminiscent of that of modern gaming consoles. But beyond that, everything the design has been cleaned up and made much more elegant. In fact, we now have much cleaner and simpler lines, without disturbing elements. A big innovation that we certainly appreciate in a device that must be part of home furnishings. Perhaps some detail is missing to smooth out, but we can now say that AVM has also kept up with the times.
Installation is really simple. Just insert the power plug (which is also available with the Italian socket) and connect the Etherner cable to the network via the WAN port. But be careful: you will need to have an Ethernet port and not the traditional twisted pair. After waiting for a few tens of seconds, the modem will be operational and you can start connecting with your devices. The WPS button is on the front with the word “Connect”, while on the back we find the ethernet door e he QR code to connect to the network. An Ethernet cable is included in the package. The passwords are on the bottom instead.
AVM FRITZ! Box 4060 review: performance and daily use
We come to the performance analysis. The specs are absolutely from top of the range. Only high-end machines will be able to saturate the bandwidth offered by this modem. Or, if we want to see it in other words, keeping many devices attached too will not put him in difficulty. In our tests, performed on the local network to avoid bottleneck of the public network, we completely saturated the bandwidth of the network card of a mid-range PC, with a speed of about 400 Mbps and a ping of 1 ms on average. Even connecting other devices to the network, the speed does not drop. We have connected up to 5. This AVM FRITZ! Box 4060 guarantees excellent performance in terms of speed. More than enough for a home connection to other services, but also small offices or professional studios, why not.
Thanks to Dual Band technology, the AVM FRITZ! Box 4060 modem guarantees both high speed and good coverage. Obviously, to make the most of the modem’s potential, you will need to receive a very clean signal. However, even if there are some walls in between, the signal still gets through, allowing you to cover the whole house. In our tests, we achieved excellent coverage of an entire floor. Even on the second floor of the house the signal was arriving, a little degraded. But you could enjoy at least 30 Mbps on average, in the most unfavorable position of the house. However, let’s not forget that with the technologie Wi-Fi Mesh you can extend the network indefinitely without interruption. In any case, the coverage is above average and you can cover a medium-sized house without major problems.
AVM FRITZ! Box 4060 review: smart features
Know that if you buy AVM FRITZ! Box 4060, you are not buying a simple modem, but a device rich in integrated features very interesting. By accessing the management page at fritz.box and entering the password, you will be able to view all the additional features that AVM has prepared for us and which fall under the name of FRTIZ! OS. First of all there are the safety-related features: there is a log where you can see who is connected to the network and how much traffic they sent through the network and we also have a blacklist to ban certain devices. There are functions of parental control and you can create customized profiles with restrictions on traffic or on the sites that can be visited. Useful features at home with kids, but especially in the professional field.
You can then connect telephones and home automation devices and manage everything within FRTIZ! OS. For gaming enthusiasts, high-performance local networks can also be created. And then we have an interesting gem. AVM FRITZ! Box 4060 also works as a NAS. In fact, by connecting it via USB to an external memory, it will allow you to access multimedia content and documents of various kinds, supporting the most common formats. Let’s say that obviously we are not at the same level as a real NAS in terms of flexibility and functionality, however for a small amateur media center it is fine. The smartphone interface is not the best, but from a PC you can enjoy a movie quite well. Also if you want to have quick access to photos, documents, videos of various kinds without paying for a cloud service, this feature is more than useful.
Conclusions
AVM FRITZ! Box 4060 is a very powerful modem router. In terms of performance it position itself on the high end of the market. With the restyling that it has undergone then we can say that we are facing a product that is quite pleasing to the eye and modern compared to its predecessors that were penalized a little by the design. The FRITZ! Ecosystem it is always well engineered and it is very simple to install the modem and interface it with other devices. The additional features of FRTIZ! OS are really useful and well implemented. The price of this product is quite high, we are talking about around 250 euros, but it is a high-end product that uses the latest technologies.
