Duergar, rubble and a shady figure | Baldur’s Gate 3: how to free Nere

As soon as you arrive at the Grymforge, you will encounter the Duergar, who have set up a camp in the mooring area. While he was trying to explore a nearby temple, Nere was trapped by a landslide in the sweet company of a poisonous gas that is slowly killing him. How to save him? We will explain it to you in the next lines.

Obviously, the easiest way to free Nere is to use an explosive to radically eliminate everything that traps him. If you already have an explosive item such as Rune Powder or Black Powder, simply throw it onto the rubble and set it on fire with a fire spell to make it explode. If, however, you don’t have it, try listening to the conversations between the gnomes who are trying to free Nere from the rubble to find out that Philomeen ran away with some Rune Powder

It’s also pretty important to remember that time is of the essence in this mission, because Nere will die after two days spent in the poison, if you rest for a long time, he will communicate telepathically with you to tell you to hurry up. If you take a long rest again without freeing him and return to the site of the rubble, you will finally find him free with Nere dead and the Duergar missing. If you decide to free Nere in Baldur’s Gate 3, we will shortly explain how to do it.

How to find Philomeen | Baldur’s Gate 3: how to free Nere

Let’s find Philomeen. Return to the Ancient Glyph near the moorings and, from there, go left towards the other side of the port. Continue around until you find a group of dead Gnomes and some Duergar trying to arrange the bodies. Save your game and pick the lock on the large stone door to enter. Walk to the left corner of the room and use perception to find the button on the wall. If you fail, reload.

Once the secret passage is open, continue along the path until you come across three Ooze. After defeating them, go up the stairs and continue left to reach the end of the cave. Jump to the other side to find a structure with a decorated door. Save again before going to the left of the door and entering the structure from the side. Here you will find Philomeen and you will have to roll a die of your choice to ensure that she does not destroy your party. If you fail, reload.

After speaking with Philomeen and successfully rolling a die, you will be given a dose of Rune Dust to destroy the rubble. After throwing it, make sure all NPCs have moved away before finally lighting it with whatever form of fire you have at your disposal.

What happens after you free him? | Baldur’s Gate 3: how to free Nere

After freeing Nere, the NPC will begin to take out his anger on everyone around him. Initially you will obviously be safe from any harm, but he will ask you to take his side in the punitive massacre that he is carrying out. This conversation has many answer options and can end in different ways. If you decide to help the Gnomes, you will have to fight against the entire Duergar camp and Nere herself. If you decide that the Duergar should not be punished, they will be paid by Nere to kill you and therefore obtain the same result as above.

If, however, you decide to ally with Nere against the Duergar, he will team up with you to fight the entire camp. Nere is a very dangerous enemy, so make your choices carefully and decide carefully who you want to ally with. Finally, if you want to reach the end of the quest in the simplest way, just let Nere die by resting twice as long. This way you can directly loot his body without any combat. But what fun is there in this way?
