Meta, the company that controls Instagram and Facebook, is working on a new text-based social network called Barcelona. It is a project that aims to win over users who are looking for an alternative to Twitter which, after the controversial maneuvers of Elon Musk, continues to lose users. But how exactly will Barcelona work?
Barcelona will be a social network where users will be able to share text posts of up to 500 characters, following the model of Twitter, Mastodon and Bluesky. It will be sort of evolution of Instagram Notesa feature that was recently introduced but hasn’t met with the desired success.
What we know about Barcelona, Meta’s alternative to Twitter
According to reports from La Repubblica, Barcelona will be closely linked to Instagram: users will be able to access the platform using the same Instagram credentials and maintaining the same username and photo.
The new social, unlike Twitter, will be decentralizeda bit like with Mastodon and Bluesky, all platforms born in response to Elon Musk’s social network.
“We’re exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text content,” a Meta spokesperson told Business Insider. “We believe there is an opportunity for a separate space for creators and public figures to share updates that pertain to their interests.”
