A particularly stimulating project regarding cryptocurrencies and the metaverse is certainly that of Axie Infinity, which we could describe as a sort of fusion between the typical dynamics of the Pokémon video game series and the virtual economy systems that we have just seen. The game is developed by the Vietnamese studio Sky Mavis and is linked to the cryptocurrencies Axie Infinity Shards (AXS) and Smooth Love Potion (SLP), both of which are based on Ethereum.
The Axie Infinity mechanism is pretty simple. If you have at least three Axies (salamander-like creatures), you can start making them fight with their counterparts. It is also possible to breed and cross them, thus obtaining other creatures to use or sell. Through the battles, Smooth Love Potion (SLP) tokens are earned, which we can consider the real currency of the game. Axie Infinity Shards (AXS) are earned during special events or through the sale of Axie.
It all sounds beautiful, and indeed it is, since in the Philippines there are even those who have found sustenance by playing permanently at Axie Infinity during the first very hard months of the pandemic. However, there is a downside to this pay-to-earn model system, or pay-to-play-to-earn to be precise: the Axies with which to start playing cost, and not cheap. At the time of writing, the less expensive Axies cost around 80 euros, for a total investment of 240 euros. An important figure, which however could be repaid by the future developments of this platform, also from the point of view of the metaverse.
Star Atlas (ATLAS and POLIS)
One of the most ambitious projects in the field of cryptocurrencies and metaverse is undoubtedly Star Atlas, Strategic and futuristic MMO based on space exploration and the conquest of territories, with the aim of giving life to a real ecosystem, based on the Solana blockchain and on the proprietary cryptocurrencies ATLAS and POLIS. The intent is to create a cross between one of the AAA games that brighten our free time and a real metaverse, powered by its own virtual economy.
Star Atlas is an early stage, but rapidly evolving project. The first minigame will be released on December 16, while for the full game we will have to wait until March 15, 2022.
