If you are looking for any ranking with the best true wireless headphones, you will probably come across the Sony WF-1000XM4 at some point. And rightly so.
The Japanese giant’s earphones have managed to stand out for their sound quality and noise cancellation, giving users a high-level acoustic experience and the right degree of isolation in any situation, whether it’s an airplane or a crowded bar.
Now the Japanese company goes one step further with the Sony WF-1000XM5officially announced today and arriving on the market in August.

The first novelty is actually very evident: the design.
– 25% in terms of volume. – 20% in terms of weight.
In short, they are now smaller and more compact but also designed to ensure a better fit and allow users to use them over the long term.
The rubbers are also different, with a material that is closer to memory foam than to good old silicone. This is because on the one hand they have to offer maximum comfort and on the other hand they are an integral part of the noise cancellation system.
“Part” because obviously there are several elements that contribute to what it promises to be once again the most effective ANC system in the segment.
In addition to the passive isolation offered by the grommets, we have un processor dedicated solely to noise cancellation which is called HD Noise Canceling Processor QN2E, joined by 1 external microphone and 2 internal microns which are responsible for collecting feedback from the ear canal. We therefore have 3 microphones for each headset, one more than the previous generation.
The result? Sony promises a 20% improvement.
Next to the chip for the ANC we naturally find the main processor, called V2, but it should really make the difference. il Dynamic Driver X. It is a new driver with a particular structure with concentric circles made up of different materials. A great little work of engineering that delivers great bass and crystal clear highs. And then we have support forHi-Res audio wireless, with Sony which has further enhanced the stability and quality of the signal, the inevitable LDAC and then the 360 Reality Audiowhich also provides head tracking to increase accuracy.
We arrive at the calls, perhaps the less and less convincing aspect of the Japanese house’s earphones. In addition to the total 6 microphones we have artificial intelligence and bone conduction, which acts as a guide for the system. In what sense? Basically it is used to clearly distinguish our speech from the noise that needs to be eliminated.
The general structure of the headphones has also changed for reduce wind interference, so communicating should be easier, no matter where we are.
Then functions such as support for Spotify remain, so you can reach the app with a tap, the Adaptive Sound Control, which adapts the sound to your position and the activity you are carrying out, the Speak to chat, to block the music when you converse with someone, and the multipoint to connect up to two devices at the same time.
The Sony WF-1000XM5 should deliver up to 24 hours with the case on and up to 8 hours on a single charge with ANC on.
Very interesting instead fast charging: with 3 minutes we should get 60 minutes of music playback. And yes, there is also the ricarica wireless.
Finally, let’s not forget sustainability: recyclable packaging, composed of paper and bamboo fibers, and recycled plastic for the body and case. A testimony of the constant attention that Sony pays to the environment.
First impressions
We’ve been testing the Sony WF-1000XM5 for a couple of days. Alas, without application support whose update we await. This prevented us from playing with the equalizer and the numerous functions present, but we can already share some considerations with you.
The first is about comfort: we loved them.
The new compact and light design, together with the new rubber pads – now also available in size SS – allow them to be worn for long periods of time without experiencing any discomfort.
We practically spent Saturday with headphones in our ears without ever needing to take them off.
The second concerns autonomy. After 2 days of intended use we still haven’t had to recharge them, a sign that the 24 hours of use guaranteed by Sony is a pretty accurate estimate.
The third and final consideration is on sound quality. Out-of-the box – so just taken out of the box and without being able to touch the app – they certainly deliver an interesting listening experience, above average and definitely satisfying. We perceive the instruments, we distinguish the voices well, the basses make their presence felt… In short, the new driver seems to do its job well.
