Meta allows you to block or limit data sharing among its main platforms: Facebook, Instagram and Messenger. A decision that follows the Digital Markets Act europeo (DMA), the EU regulation aimed at countering possible abuses of dominant positions by large digital platforms. Those who have already linked their accounts will be able to decide whether to maintain the connection through the Account Management Center.
Meta warns that opting for separation will entail some consequences, such as the loss of the ability to share the same post between Facebook and Instagram. Furthermore, content and ads will be “less personalized”: if you often search for content on your favorite group on Instagram, you won’t get suggestions on Facebook.

This change allows users who are more conscientious about privacy to protect themselves. But many users will realistically prefer the convenience of keeping accounts connected. The point is precisely the possibility of choice which, before the regulations, was not possible. It remains to be seen whether these changes will make the market more competitive, as the EU would like.
