What’s new in iPadOS 16
The news for iPadOS 16.1, which you can download from today, are many. But the theme seems the same: let you collaborate and optimize iPad for those who work. The app Messages is a good example of this philosophy: from today you can send an invitation to collaborate through Messages are File, Keynote, Pages, and also on Safari. You can also initiate a FaceTime call with all co-workers to discuss the work together.
The Mail become smarter, with the ability to schedule them and even cancel sending within seconds if you do something wrong. Also, comes a memorandum for when you forget something (for example you talked about an attachment but didn’t upload it).
L’app Freeform (which will arrive later this year) instead allows you to have a whiteboard to collaborate on creative projects. Again, maximum integration with Messages and FaceTime. This app will also be usable on macOS Ventura, as you can see from this image.
An interesting novelty concerns the ICloud Shared Librarywhich allows you to choose which photos and videos to share with other users: this function will arrive by the end of 2022.
iPadOS will also integrate all the smart home accessories of the new standard Matterso you can control more and more smart devices directly with your iPad from the app My Home. Also there will be interesting news for Safari: the ability to share collections of websites with a group, the introduction of PassKey to increase security by replacing passwords with biometric authentication via Touch ID and Face ID.
Also, the app will finally arrive Weather forecast even on iPad, optimized for larger screens.
Active Text, Visual Search and Stage Manager
Among the novelties related to artificial intelligence, the most amazing are Active Text and Visual Search. The first allows you to recognize the writings in the images, but with iPadOS it becomes possible to do so even in the still images of the videos. The second, on the other hand, allows you to ‘crop’ an image by holding your finger on an object or person. Artificial intelligence makes it possible to recognize the subject and crop it: now you can search the image online or send it as a sticker in the various messaging apps.
On macOS 13 and iPadOS 16 there will also be a new way of experiencing multitasking: it is Stage Manager, one of the most anticipated news for today’s launch. With this new mode you will see in the center the app (or apps) you are using, while on the side there will be windows of the apps you have used recently and are open. They can also be divided into groups, so you can better organize your work.
This novelty will come only on iPad con chip M2 e M2as well as on the iPad Pro of 2018 and 2020 (where, however, there will be no support for the external display).
What’s new in macOS 13
The new macOS 13 Ventura will enjoy many of the features we discussed talking about iPadOS 16. In particular, you will also find on Macs:
- The news for Mail and Messages
- Passkey and shared panels in Safari
- Stage Manager
- Freeform
- ICloud shared library
- Weather app (but the Clock app also debuts here, already present on iPadOS)
Plus, some really useful features come along. Among all, the one that seems most interesting to us is Continuity, which allows us to exploit iPhone like a Mac webcam. You can then use the excellent cameras of your smartphone with all the features such as Portrait mode, Photo Set Light and Auto Framing.
The search for Spotlight improves with a renewed design and more intuitive use. The visual search also allows you to recognize insects, birds, animals and various new monuments. Security increases with Rapid Security Response, as does the gamer experience on Mac thanks to MetalFX Upscaling. And then System Preferences becomes System Settingslike on the iPhone and iPad.
These are the main innovations coming to iPadOS 16 and macOS 13. Apple usually releases updates around 7pm, so you should be able to download these updates by evening. What is the function that piques your interest the most? Let us know in the comments.
