Artificial intelligence is one of the four major themes chosen by Italy as a priority for the presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe which will start on November 17th. Particular weight will be given to the impact of AI with regard to human rights, according to what was declared by the Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Benedetto Della Vedova.
Italy: artificial intelligence at the heart of the Council of Europe
Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Benedetto Della Vedova, recently met with the leaders of the pan-European institution to briefly illustrate the agenda of the semester of the Italian presidency, an area in which the desire to bring the question of artificial intelligence in relation to human rights to the table of the Council of Europe emerged.
During the council the themes of theto protect the rights of women and minors, and of course that of safeguarding cultural heritage; a topic that is always hot and current in our country. In addition, several other issues concerning Italy will be addressed, such as the convictions of the European Court of Human Rights and the failure to create an independent commission on rights.
L’artificial intelligence and the capacity of a system from carry out tasks, solve problems, respond to commands and so on. Every moment, without realizing it, we use artificial intelligence, think for example of when we do a search on Google, download an app, or even when we use whatsapp, facebook and all the appropriate social networks.
The issue of human rights associated with this technology is linked to the fact that with these systems various processes can be implemented to harm the privacy and rights of individuals, hence the presentation of this diatribe to the Council of Europe. A hot topic, especially with regard to tracking systems such as facial recognition, the subject of abuse allegations since time immemorial.
