The Council of the European Union approved when already expressed by European Parliament some weeks ago: roaming in the EU remains free until 2032. The new regulation thus becomes official, replacing the one expiring on 30 June 2022. You can surf with your smartphone even abroad without additional costs within the Union.
The EU approves free roaming until 2032
Last year a formal agreement had already arrived on the renewal of the regulation, which allows you to surf with smartphones and any other mobile device even abroad. In all countries of the European Union. And not only that: also in Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
Since 2017 170 million people they were able to navigate abroad without any problem. But also make calls home without having to pay not even a euro cent more than what is foreseen by your tariff plan. Something we weren’t used to until very recently, when making calls or surfing without WiFi could cost dearly abroad.
But the success was huge. More and more people started surfing the internet freely across Europe. Do you think that in 2019 the increase was 17 times over the previous year.
The new regulation will now apply for the next ten years, until 2032. And there are also changes compared to the past. For example now the costs to contact i emergency services are reset in all countries of the Union. And telecom companies have an obligation to notify customers in the event of increases for services such as helpdesk.
But there are also news on the side of telco companies: for example reviews the costs of wholesale connections to ensure that they are sustainable by operators from all over the continent. On this aspect there may still be some changes desired by the Commission. But for us users it should be certain by now: roaming will remain free for the next decade.
