LG Display seems to be in the final stages of the revision of the projectPolycrystalline oxide OLED (LTPO) at low temperature for the iPhone 14 Pro Max. To report it is the portal The Elec, which claims that the Cupertino company should make this decision within a couple of weeks. If the answer were to be positive, it would be a big step forward for the South Korean manufacturer, which for the first time is attempting to market its LTPO display.
LG Display: the LTPO display awaiting Apple’s approval
We imagine there is great excitement within LG Display, waiting for Apple to definitively approve its LTPO display for the production of theiPhone 14 Pro Max. The samples of LG Display in Cupertino, in fact, initially showed problems in the encapsulation of the thin film and in the hole positioned on the top of the front camera. Therefore, the company had to change some masks used in the production process – at least so some sources claim -. And now the new samples are undergoing a reliability test.
Now, if Apple rejects the new samples within two weeks, LG Display will have to go through another similar process, which will delay approval for another two weeks. If the approval arrives by early October, the South Korean company will be able to start mass production immediately. From what has leaked on the Net, there is talk of about 8 million units, with the possibility of recovering some of the displays deemed suitable from the batches already made. In the meantime, however, it will be Samsung Display to supply the displays for the production of the iPhone 14, having won the approval of Apple.
Indeed, it should be noted that the company has also had to order more equipment for the production of LTPO OLEDs due to the unexpectedly increased demand, due to the setback of its rival. On the other hand, we know that Apple uses LTPO OLED panels for its Pro models, which are having a rather high demand.
