At each level up you will be guaranteed skill points, which can be spent in the three available skill trees: one in common between the two protagonists and two specific to each.

The latter will prove particularly useful for leveling up because, by completing the secondary tasks on the left of the screen, you will be able to alter (positively!) the EXP obtained once the crime has been foiled. Then undoubtedly completing all the secondary missions, carefully marked with the various markers on the map, will guarantee you a disproportionate amount of experience points, useful for maximizing the power of the heroes.

Finally, a gem that will allow you to get some experience points even while exploring New York, flitting between one building and the next. A method already widely known by all those who have played and completed the first chapter, but which may have been overlooked by those who approached the franchise with the sequel. Swinging between the buildings, once you let go of the web and before pressing R2 again to launch the next one, by holding square and moving the right joystick you can perform stunts.
Each stunt will guarantee you an experience point, which is certainly infinitesimal compared to the other methods described so far, but which does not alter your navigation speed in any way and adds small amounts of EXP which, added together, can help you get closer to your goal.
