In the regions Piedmont, Puglia and Umbria, today, 14 September 2023, will take place the second test of the new national public warning system, known as IT-alert. This innovative system is based on the technology of cell broadcast and was created to inform the population in case of serious emergencies. Previous tests in other regions of Italy have demonstrated the effectiveness of the system, which could soon become a vital tool for public safety.
IT-alert: second test in Piedmont, Puglia and Umbria
The IT-alert system wants to reach – for this test – all people, including those who are in transit, in the regions involved and in neighboring areas. Around 12:00, smartphones with an active telephone connection in the Piedmont, Puglia or Umbria area may receive a test message. This message, also available in Englishaims to inform people that this is a test of the Italian public warning system.
The text of the test message reads: “IT-Alert – This is a TEST MESSAGE from the Italian public alert system. Once operational it will alert you in the event of a serious emergency. For information go to the website www.it-alert.it and fill out the questionnaire.” This message is accompanied by a high volume alarm sound and, in some cases, by a vocal synthesis that repeats the message in both Italian and English.
IT-alert has already passed a series of tests in various Italian regions in the previous months. These tests demonstrated the effectiveness of the system in real emergency situations. Starting from 12 September 2023, the second phase of testing began, which will gradually involve all the remaining regions of Italy, as well as the autonomous provinces of Bolzano and Trento. Unlike the previous phase, this time usually three regions will be involved at a time.
The first test of the new calendar took place just two days ago in the regions Campania, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Marche. And it was a success. Now, the focus shifts to Piedmont, Puglia and Umbria, where the second test will be held today, 14 September 2023.
