PayPal allows customers to shop and pay with peace of mind. It recently introduced the passkey in the US on Apple and Google Android devices as a new easy and secure login method for eligible PayPal customers. Starting today, PayPal will expand passkeys to eligible customers on Apple and Google Android devices in Italy.
PayPal introduces the passkey: what is it and how does it work?
A passkey allows users to log in securely to PayPal without entering your password. Instead, the user’s identity is verified by means of biometric data or with the device password. So that users can log in quickly and securely.
These keys are a new industry standard created by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium. Designed to replace passwords with cryptographic key pairs and using digital credentials, such as biometric sensors, including fingerprint, facial recognition and PIN or pattern. Passkeys offer customers a simple and secure way to log in to PayPal, powered by technology that helps prevent phishing.
A founding member of the FIDO Alliance, PayPal is one of the first financial services companies to make passkey authentication available to its users. Passkeys are known to be highly resistant to phishing, credential stuffing, and other remote attacks. This state-of-the-art security standard solves some of the biggest security problems on the web, namely the weakness of password authentication.
How to create a PayPal Passkey on Apple devices
The creation and using a key with PayPal is a quick and easy process on an Apple device. Once created, passkeys are synced with iCloud Keychain, ensuring a strong and private relationship between the customer and their device and an easy login experience for PayPal users with devices equipped with iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1, macOS Ventura or successive versions.
When eligible customers log into PayPal.com using Safari and their existing PayPal credentials, they will have the option to “Create a passkey”. After successfully verifying existing credentials, customers will be prompted to authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID to create their passkey.
How to create a PayPal Passkey on Google Android devices
Customers can easily create and use a key for PayPal on a device with Android 9+.
- Sign in to PayPal with the Chrome browser from your Android 9+ device, using your existing credentials.
- The “Create a passkey” option may appear along with passkey information. In addition to using their existing credentials, the user will be prompted to authenticate the same way they usually unlock the device, which will create the passkey.
- Afterwards, the user will be redirected to the PayPal home screen. The next time you log in, you will be able to start using the passkey on Android 9+ devices.
Once a passkey is created, PayPal customers will be able to log in with the key as their primary login method instead of their PayPal password, wherever it is available. Additional authentication measures may be required.
