“But Pokémon from Normal doesn’t even have the words”: Scarlet and Violet’s normal type is extraordinary and these ten prove it
Among the elements seen in the series Pokémonil Normal type is perhaps one of the most mistreated and Scarlet and Violet they remind us how undeserved the fame of this free zone can be. Aside from a weakness to the Fighting type, the standard element is known for its own neutrality. Not having weaknesses to 17 out of 18 types is no small feat, and in the Paldea region it is possible to reshuffle the cards on the table with normal creatures that boast very peculiar secondary types. For this reason, we have rounded up ten critters whose example of normality is truly out of the ordinary.
General preamble
If you want a good Normal-type to hire in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s team, try to make sure there aren’t others! The importance of a balanced team it should never be forgotten, and we advise you to avoid monotypes. There are 18 elements that a creature can belong to and as we said in our review of the games, the adventure will cover them one by one. You have be free places: with double-type animals you can get to fill them 12 and, if you like, with the right therapies you could potentially cover every weakness reaching 18 (or rather, 13 in one fight). Normal monsters are vulnerable versus Lottabut in return they are also (mutually) immune to Ghost-type.
Slaking
Talking about Pokémon Ruby Version and Sapphire Version without saying “at the time it seemed like a good idea” is impossible, and remembering it provides Slaking, the tenth Normal type in our Scarlet and Violet tier list. In the evolutionary line of Slakoth, all except Vigoroth have the strange ability Lazy. The latter forces the fat belly to attack every other turn. We wouldn’t be recommending him to you, therefore, if it weren’t for his excellent stats. You can find Vigoroth in the same area where Ditto is, while for a wild Slaking you will need to reach the Toasted Boscoat the extreme northwest of Paldea.
Tauros – the best Normal-type Pokémon for Scarlet and Violet
Getting into the top ten by cheating a bit is Bulls. Given the links with the real world of the series, we shouldn’t explain why the Torobrado has a regional form, which however boasts three new types: Lotta, Fight/Fire e Fight/Water. These last two it depends on the version you playand you have to find the elemental variants in the various herds. To get something good out of the Normal-type moveset you will have to resort to Gore (65 power) and TM, before level 50 in which Tauros learns Blow. You can find it South of Lake Gran Cauldron… or rather, he will find you.
Ursaring – the best Normal-type Pokémon for Scarlet and Violet
The second generation bear makes its triumphant return! While not enjoying the phenomenal Ursaluna evolution from Legends: Arceus, waiting to be able to import it via Pokémon HOME next year you can play around with Ursaring. His attack power (130) and the Guts ability, which further increases him in case of status problems, are his greatest strengths. His early game moveset, however, leaves something to be desired. You can find the pre-evolution Teddiursa by itself in the central-eastern wooded areas of the southern half of Paldeaand together with Ursaring northeast of the region outside the Sierra Nepada.
Cyclizar – the best Normal-type Pokémon for Scarlet and Violet
Contemporary counterpart of Koraidon and Miraidon in all but name, Cyclizar it is easy to find and has a very strong combination: Dragon/Normal. We didn’t put him in the top ten dragons, that’s true, but just for the competition. For the rest, his stats are great for a Pokémon that doesn’t contemplate evolution, and as youtuber Alpharad demonstrated in his Let’s Play of games, finding him at the beginning of the game allows you to pulverize the first Gyms without too many stories. You can find Cyclizar south of Lake Gran Cauldronclose to Leudapolis lighthouse e south of the latter.
Pyroar – the best Normal-type Pokémon for Scarlet and Violet
If you want a glass cannon (strong on offense, a little less on defense), feel free to rely on Pyroar. This Fire/Normal boasts a good special attack and very good speed, while lacking in life points and decent stats on defense. As a combination of types, however, it is not all bad: Pyroar in fact enjoys six resistances and the aforementioned immunity to the Ghost type. The pre-evolution Litleo hangs out a bit all the southeast of Paldeawhile Pyroar tend to move in herds in areas adjacent to the Sierra Nepada in the northeastern quadrant of the region. Packs usually consist of an adult Pyroar surrounded by Litleo, or a harem consisting of a male Pyroar and his concubines.
Braviary – the best Normal-type Pokémon for Scarlet and Violet
The triumph of Americanness that contributed to the appeal of the Unova region is back. Braviary it is an eagle of type Normal/Flying whose strength relies on physical moves relegated to the Flying type. Attacks such as Gran Fisico go to corroborate the flagships of the moveset, such as Baldeali and Gigaimpact. Without adequate speed, it can be difficult to take advantage of, and a fixed special attack at 57 altitude limits the number of Flying-type attacks that can be used. The Normal subtype, however, opens up several possibilities for the STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus, a boost to attacks when they match the type of Pokémon). The pre-evolution Rufflet is found everywherebut more often than not it tends to stay more in the air than on the ground. Aim with ZLin case!
Arbolive – the best Normal-type Pokémon for Scarlet and Violet
Smoliv’s final evolution shares its type Grass/Normal. With only 78 life and an unfavorable type combination, sapling balances his defensive weaknesses with good overall defense stats and a great 125 special attack. His Pea Spreader’s signature ability allows him to convert the battlefield into a grassy area as soon as he takes an attack. This not only allows him to further increase the power of his non-physical Grass attacks, but also allows him to heal himself a little at a time each turn. Pre-evolution Smoliv is obtainable in the olive groves around Moldulciawhere there is the Bug-type Gym.
Farigiraf – the best Normal-type Pokémon for Scarlet and Violet
Seeing a new evolution for a Pokémon of the first two generations always fills our hearts with joy, and Girafarig goes from being a weak attacker in defense to an adult form capable of taking far more hits, albeit with a little less speed . Farigirafas Normal/Psychic, it can switch between Normal-type physical moves and Psychic-type special attacks at will. Given the latter typology, the ritual question is: “Yes, but when does he learn Psychic?” Simply put, at level 50. You’re better off TM’ing until then. Girafarig is available south of Lake Gran Cauldronwhere there are also Tauros and Cyclizar.
Dudunsparce – the best Normal-type Pokémon for Scarlet and Violet
Okay, listen to us for a moment. Dunsparce has always been the joke of the Gold and Silver versions, but now that he has found an evolution in Dudunsparce, this Pokémon now boasts an offensive boost (attack AND special attack) that makes it more reliable. As for moves, the evolution can now learn (by level!) Roll, Ancient Power, Screwdriver, Dragon Rush and even Typhoon. Dudunsparce’s only weakness, as a monotype, is its Fighting attacks. You can find the basic Pokémon Dunsparce almost throughout Paldeabut it is down and, unlike Orthworm, once hidden underground it never resurfaces.
Blissey
Without Snorlax and Arceus around, the Normal-type metagame could only go to one Pokémon. Reign of Terror by Blissey continues, with its 255 life points and its fixed special defense at 135 which have made it a favorite since its debut in Pokémon Gold and Silver Version. In addition to cashing like little else, Blissey can also use moves like Toxin and Thunder Wave, inflicting two status ailments that we mentioned when talking about Toxtricity. Its special attack (75) makes up for its deficiencies in physical attack (10). Happiny can be found at game startbefore even the first Pokémon Center, but it is very rare and tends to run away. Idem per Chansey (surroundings from Great Cauldron Lake e Sierra Attacks) and, in extremely rare occasions when it appears wild, Blissey himself (surroundings of Sierra Napada).
