After a period characterized by the supply crisis, Sony is now making up for lost ground. The company has in fact released the sales data of the PlayStation 5 (PS5), and the numbers are record-breaking.
Sony has indeed sold a total of 38.4 million consoles since launch of 2020. Of these, 19.1 million units were sold in 2022 alone, with 6.5 million in the second quarter alone (an incredible figure considering this is a non-holiday period of time, with sales usually low). Exceeded all expectations then, given that in 2022 Sony expected to ship just under 18 million PS5.
Sony: sales record for PS5 but games are declining
The news hasn’t been as good on the software front. Game sales are it dropped to 68 million compared to 70.5 million the previous year. PlayStation Network subscribers also fell (from 112 million in the previous quarter to 108 million). PlayStation Plus subscriptions are on the rise.
More generally, the Gaming & Network Services division benefited from an increase in turnover (from $4.9 billion a year earlier to well 7.9 billion).
It was therefore a decidedly positive 2022 for Sony, and the decline in games shouldn’t worry too much given the growing market interest in subscription services (and the increase in PlayStation Plus subscribers underlines this push).
