Reddit, the popular social media platform based on thematic communities called subreddits, has announced a new messaging feature with dedicated chats for individual subreddits.
Subreddit chat channels, as they have been defined, are effectively a real-time messaging space located within a specific subreddit. Chats allow members to exchange opinions, jokes and reactions on topics of common interest.
Reddit: How the new subreddit chat channels work
These new chat channels should not be confused with the existing Live Chat feature. In fact, this allows individual users to create private or non-private conversation groups. Subreddit chat channels, on the other hand, are spaces open to anyone following a certain topic, and are fixed, they cannot be created or closed.
In announcing the launch of the new feature, Reddit specified that chats will be moderated to avoid toxic or offensive behavior. The feature has been launched experimentally on 25 volunteer subreddits (unfortunately the platform did not reveal which ones). However it will be extended to all in the near future.
