The ending of the game in question consists of a scene in which we see the protagonist Guybrush Threepwood walking in a carnival with his brother / rival / pirate LeChuck, both of whom have become children again. As the parents approach to express to Guybrush their joy at learning that the boy is okay, LeChuck’s eyes turn red, possibly enraged or even possessed. The ending had given way to numerous interpretations, discussed for over 30 years by fans of the series.
“I really wanted the new game to start right from that scene, in that same amusement park,” Gilbert told Adventure Gamers. In another interview Gilbert stated that it is not the same game the couple would have made in the 90s.
“Today we are different people,” explained the game designer. “Many of the ideas I had in mind for what would be the third installment of the franchise have already been realized.”
