The curtain falls on the third season of Only Murders in the Building and it’s time to take stock. Last week’s episode had taken us towards the solution to the case, only partially understood by the trio. The revelation of Ben’s killer quite early, right from the start, being somehow anticipated by the theme of motherhood that has run through many of the episodes of this season. Precisely for this reason, perhaps unfortunately, there is no real climax on the mystery to be solved. This, however, is a key to understanding this season, perhaps more comedy than crime. From the premiere to the premiere of Oliver’s play, everything worked out for the best and the show was a success, a worthy conclusion to a very complex journey.

The last episode of the season of Only Murders in the Building ultimately leads all the protagonists towards a summary happy ending, except for a twist that immediately projects us towards a fourth season, freshly renewed. It is about, it seems almost superfluous to say, a new assassination inside the palace, which also opens up new questions, also because it is probable that in reality the intended victim was Charles, and this would have enormous implications. These reasonings belong, however, to a future yet to be written: for the moment let’s focus on what we saw in this third season of the series distributed by Disney+, analyzing the season finale of Only Murders in the Building.
As mentioned in the introduction, Only Murders in the Building gives everyone a happy ending. Starting clearly from Oliver, who finally manages to bring his musical to the stage, obtaining enthusiastic reviews from critics which certified the redemption of his career. In addition to his professional glory, there is also the personal satisfaction of his relationship with Loretta, which is as lively and passionate as ever. The woman also achieves her goals: she is officially reunited with her son Dickie and is ready to make the leap in quality in her career. Charles finally gets his recognition as an actor and also receives a message from Joy that may be a prelude to a reconciliation, while Mabel solves the caseonce again showing his great skill, and makes a choice with Tobert, after much uncertainty.

On the sidelines of the closure of the plots of this third season, the series also scatters here and there some clues for the future: a new murder, the transfer of Tobert and Loretta to Los Angeles for work, with Mabel and Oliver who have admitted to liking the city in small doses. It can’t be a coincidence that two characters get such a close connection to Los Angeles and who knows then, in the future, we won’t be able to make a foray into the city of cinemaa scenario that could give the series a new tone.
The final episode of Only Murders in the Building, ultimately, was the right culmination for a season which, while maintaining the high level to which the series has accustomed us, showed some more uncertainty than in the past. This episode, however, is marked by a certain solemnity, a magnificence embodied by the alternation of moments of the show and the actual plot. The songs and performances on stage guaranteed an important scenographic contribution and gave the narrative a fast-paced rhythm, capable of captivating the spectator. All very convincing aesthetically though it was the plot representing the weak point of the season.
Conclusions
Compared to the previous two seasons, the plot of this third chapter of the series was more uncertain. The crime and investigations, focal points of the past seasons, have given way to other issues here and this is a bit disappointing. The mystery of Ben’s death is much less exciting than the others solved by the trio and even the final resolution is not impressive. On the other hand, the chemistry between the three protagonists still works great and even the individual plots have progressed very well. It is also necessary to underline, in addition to the usual great performance of the trio, also the additions of this third season, above all Meryl Streep e Paul Rudd, capable of raising the already dizzying artistic level of Hulu production. We therefore await other important incursions into the cast, and we look forward to the fourth season.
