ORIGINAL TITLE: Only Murders in the Building. TYPE: comedy, yellow. NATION: United States. REGIA: Don Scardino. CAST: Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez, Paul Rudd, Meryl Streep. DURATION: 40 minutes per episode. DISTRIBUTOR: Disney+. EXIT: from 8 August 2023.
After the double episode that opened the new season and the unveiling of the first suspect in the crime to be solved in the third episode, Only Murders in the Building 3 continues in the plot development, questions (even if it doesn’t completely deny) the goals achieved so far and raises a new (truly unsuspecting) suspicion. In this episode Tina Fey returns to the scene but this is also the first where we don’t see Meryl Streep, and his absence, it must be admitted, was felt. At the same time there is a first rapprochement between Mable (Selena Gomez) e Oliver (Martin Short).
Trama e trailer | Review Only Murders in the Building 3: episodio 4
The fourth episode of the third season of Only Murders in the Building is mainly focused on Charles, the true protagonist of the episode. The episode revolves around the actor’s difficulty in singing the song that Oliver assigned him in his show and which, in reality, hides other uncertainties, which culminate in a decidedly unexpected end of the episode. When he sings, let’s see Charles go to the so-called “white room”, a place of unconsciousness where the actor takes refuge while on stage he completely loses control of himself. The same mechanism arises in the episode finale, when the character played by Steve Martin tries to talk to his partner Joy about her uncertainties about cohabitation and, going once more to the white room, he ends up asking her to marry him.
If in recent weeks the character most in difficulty had seemed Oliver, this time we are witnessing a total reversal of the situation, with Mable, and above all Charles, grappling with his own problems. The torment for the actor stems mainly from his relationship difficulties and the inability to establish a spontaneous and healthy bond. To this are added, as we will soon see, i new suspicions that settle on the woman. The stress of the show, that of living together and the desire to solve the murder are creating an overload in the character who must find his stability again in order not to risk shipwreck.
A new suspicion and old temptations | Only Murders in the Building 3: Episode 4 review
As mentioned, however, it is Joy who, at the end of the episode, is pointed to as the new suspect in the carousel that the Hulu series punctually stages to extricate herself from the mystery of Arconia. Suspicions about Kimber, in fact, largely dissipate, considering that she had no love affair with Ben, but she was only trying to exploit her image of her to gain visibility on social media. The make-up artist thus ends up in the dock for her own lipstick found in Ben’s dressing room. We don’t know if she really is the ruthless killer, but certainly there will be new developments on the front of her relationship with Oliver, already grotesque and sincerely very fun to watch. Hard times ahead for Charles, who can’t hide in the white room forever, but has to face reality and his difficulties.
This last episode also talks about Mable, always looking for a home and her own dimension outside of the investigations, who often remains alone due to the numerous commitments of the two elderly colleagues. In this situation comes a indecent Proposal by Cinda Canning (Tina Fey), who would like Mable as her podcast partner. Initially the girl, out of loyalty to her friends, refuses, but it is clear that the offer is attractive, given that the character played by Selena Gomez is not only isolated in the investigation, but also has to deal with her own difficulties cheap.
Conclusions
Episode 4 of Only Murders in the Building 3 is therefore the most introspective so far, dealing with the private lives of the protagonists, which could jeopardize the solidity of the trio. And indeed, never before has the future of the Arconia detectives been in the balance and everyone’s paths seem to be able to take different paths. Will the passion for true crime save the day? We will of course find out in the next few episodes. On the other hand we can say that this episode was also very funny, confirming the comic vein of the series.
Plus points
- Very funny, full of gags
- The return of Tina Fey, who can shuffle the cards
Points against
- The pace of the investigation slows down
