Peter Quill is just a child but he meets Ego, the living planet and his father. What would have happened if an intergalactic threat had descended upon Earth decades before Thanos? This is the question posed by the episode of the Disney+ series What If…? in the second episode. The answer involves both the history of the Avengers and that of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Avengers: A Previous Generation | Review What If…? 2 episode 2
In this series, as in the first, alternative futures are proposed for the most (or least) beloved characters of the Marvel cinematic universe. In the second episode of the second season the protagonist is once again a future Guardian, Peter Quill, who is not adopted by Yondu but rather handed over after his kidnapping to Ego, who shapes his mind making it become a weapon for the conquest of Earth. New threat forces Howard Stark, T’Chaka, Hank Pym, the Winter Soldier and Peggy Carter to reunite.
A perspective which, in reality, presents itself almost as a nostalgic reference to the Avengers team that the public has gotten to know through the world of comics for almost 80 years, recounting dynamics, heroes and socio-political realities that were deeply linked to the historical events that were taking place at the time the comics were written.
A blast from the past | Review What If…? 2 episode 2
The episode confirms the high level of the first and in many respects continues a common thread that could lead to a season epilogue that connects several episodes. The development of a story continues over time, in this case in the past, and they continue to be there countless quotes, even if to the same Marvel films. Self-referentiality leads to the conclusion that, even if the factors changed, the Avengers would still continue to be the protectors of the Earth and always victorious.
Despite the unconventional beginning and the deviation taken from Peter’s story, the conclusion is always the same: by channeling power, the young man manages to destroy Ego’s physical form, after discovering his mother’s murder. The last minutes of the episode where all the members of the team meet at Hank’s house, sitting at the table ready to share a family lunch, recalls in the feeling of union, the many everyday scenes at the Avengers Campound that have been seen in the MCU films. A team that, to reach the maximum of its strength, does not need particular superpowers.
