Captain Carter helps the Avengers win the Battle of New York, but he can’t help but deal with the past. In a development more or less parallel to that of the ordinary timeline, Captain Carter after the events in New York works to eliminate all the Hydra bases in the world, until in one of these he meets a lethal machine governed by Steve Rogers, now almost completely deprived of his conscience. Unfortunately, the clash with this new threat will not lead to anything good, despite the efforts and initial success.
The cards are changing in Hydra | Review What If…? 2 episode 5
In this series, as in the first, alternative futures are proposed for the most (or least) beloved characters of the Marvel cinematic universe. In the fifth episode of the second season the protagonist is (as has already happened in the past) Captain Carterwhich challenges Hydra in a clash from which the intent is also to save Steve Rogers, victim of the criminal organization’s most brutal experiments. In this episode there is room for Black Widow and Bucky Barnes, who is now elderly and heads SHIELD. The discovery of the canon Captain America inside a lethal humanoid robot is just the beginning of a series of surprises.
This episode stands out for two reasons: the first is the interesting point of view behind the development of Captain Carter’s story, which not surprisingly does not differ much from that of Captain America. The second reason is that in this episode we find one of the protagonists of the first season of What If…?, after Gamora, in what can now be considered a pattern.
Turning point with new questions | Review What If…? 2 episode 5
The episode thus ends with a great doubt linked to the fate of Captain Carter, which vanishes into thin air leaving even the Observer stunned. Thus, the subplot that will link all the seasonal episodes officially begins, the details of which are not yet known. This is undoubtedly a positive aspect of an episode that stands out as always on a graphic level, but also for the courage it shows in the choices, for once, not to save everyone. Thus the anticipation rises for the next episodes which perhaps will be able to explain the mystery.
Points in favor
- Suspended ending that intrigues
- It doesn’t force a happy ending
Points against
- The Black Widow subplot could have been used better
