Sony HDC-F5500, the camera for a cinematic look

Sony is pleased to announce the system camera HDC-F5500 will be available in Europe from spring 2022. Let’s find out all the details of this new proposal together.

La Sony HDC-F5500

The Sony HDC-F5500 boasts a format Super 35 mm high sensitivity and is therefore ideal for achieving a cinematic look. It is equipped with an image sensor 4K CMOS global shutter and perfectly integrated into live production systems.

The HDC-F5500 is designed as a powerful tool for those seeking creative expression. Thanks to the global shutter effect that prevents rolling shutter and flash band distortions, this camera works well even in particular lighting conditions. Such as at concerts, with fast moving LED lasers.

The image sensor with global shutter technology and shallow depth of field is also perfect for live studios in combination with a virtual system based on LED video wall.

HDC-F5500, for the first time in an S35mm system, includes the motorized 8-step ND filter Sony’s VENICE digital cinema cameras. Everything can be controlled locally or remotely. Another important feature of the new system camera is its wide color gamut. Support for BT.2020, S-Gamut3 / S-Gamut3.cine and HLG enhances creativity and realism.

Il workflow

From a workflow perspective, the HDC-F5500 integrates into the production system IP Live di Sony using the HDCU-5500 series. It also boasts remote production thanks to integration with the HDCE-TX50 IP extension adapter.

The camera also supports full compatibility with Sony’s remote control panels. Thanks to this feature, video engineers can perform shading and coloring in live. The HDC-F5500 is also compatible with Sony’s existing SR Live for HDR workflow, with HLG and S-Log3, which is establishing itself on the global market as a workflow for HDR live production.

The statements

“We are delighted to add this camera to our portfolio, in particular to respond to the growing demand for a cinematic look in the European sports market,” commented Norbert Package, Head of Live Production, Sony Professional Europe. “Sony’s cameras are known for their advanced technology and reliable, long-life workflow and are a good choice from a sustainability standpoint. The new camera will be able to be used by our customers for many years to come due to its adaptability and innovative features. “

Yannick Dumartineix, Head of Production at RTS said: “We did our first live shooting test with UHD wide sensor in Montreux during the 2014 edition. As the artistic direction of the Montreux Jazz Festival decided to manage a cinematic look at the auditorium Stravinsky, we were going to use the f-55. Since our OBs are equipped with the HDC-5500, the output of the F-5500 is a great opportunity for us to switch to the wide sensor in an intelligent way, as we only have to replace the camera head and keep the rest of the body ” .
